Twitter Weekly Updates for the Week of 2010-04-11

  • @danielpunkass Perhaps that's exactly it. No one can accuse them of anti-trust violations if they don't bundle iBooks. in reply to danielpunkass #
  • @thelindsayellis The song itself or her cover? Jill Sobule's version is nice and happy. in reply to thelindsayellis #
  • @Fisher12 Most of the professional reviewers (the "A List") have had them for a while, under NDA. So they have their review done in advance. in reply to Fisher12 #
  • @joehewitt How well does VNC work on iPad? Can you easily run 2 applications side by side? I'd like to do this; concerned re: small screen. #
  • Laptop: Barely 1 hour of life off a battery that reports itself 95 percent charged. Battery dying again? This'd be the 2d time in a year. #
  • @fraserspeirs First read that as "Master Chief." Had very strange mental image for a moment. :) in reply to fraserspeirs #
  • @wilw What Noise Canceling Headphones do you use? in reply to wilw #
  • @joehewitt Were there any other projects to develop iPhone apps without ObjC besides Adobe's Flash back door? Honestly curious. in reply to joehewitt #
  • Resetting U-Verse gateway's device list double-NAT'd Airport Extreme router. Trying to fix now. If I disappear from net, assume I exploded. #
  • … And we're back. Nothing exploded. Sparkles! Sparkles for everyone! #
  • @danielpunkass I'm curious, does Google/Palm allow any language to be used on Android/Pre, or do they give you a finite list of options? in reply to danielpunkass #
  • @danielpunkass It'd be anticompetitive if they targeted Adobe by name. A by-discretion provision that happens to cover Adobe is okay. in reply to danielpunkass #
  • @danielpunkass Not trying to be pedantic/argumentative. Curious how much non-academic devel. is actually done using non-supported languages. in reply to danielpunkass #
  • @danielpunkass I'm confused re: people's upset; its been rule since Day 1. What changed besides Apple rewriting the language to clarify? in reply to danielpunkass #
  • @danielpunkass Point. But I'm not sure that's enforceable. If result is valid ObjC, how'd Apple know? Adobe admits it, sells a way to do it. in reply to danielpunkass #
  • I think Apple will use the language to go after final product distributed to circumvent SDK (i.e.: Adobe). Otherwise, how would Apple know? #

Twitter Weekly Updates for the Week of 2010-03-28

  • Is there a reason #Mac OS only supports WEP encryption on ad hoc wireless networks? Omission of WPA seems bizarre. Licensing issue? #
  • @thelindsayellis I loved Day After Tomorrow. I focused on wacky disaster movie hijinks rather than any underlying message. Evil snow wolves! in reply to thelindsayellis #
  • Just bought a ton of Sprint 3G/4G kit. Excited! … My wallet hurts. #
  • RT @levarburton: Happy Birthday, Bill… You're still a young man! @williamshatner 79 today. #
  • Dreamt I met @jeffjarvis, as if played by Robert Redford from "All the President's Men." We were @ a diner; he had plate of bacon & sausage. #
  • My Spring 4G wireless dongle has a $4.99 fee b/c it's a "spending limit" account, which allegedly pays for phone feature (didn't get phone). #
  • Sprint 4G wireless "spending limit" fee seems more like a "you should use autopay" fee (autopay waives fee). But no security deposit reqr'd. #
  • Largest web registrar, GoDaddy, to stop registering sites in China 2 protest government surveillance http://bit.ly/djtc8l /via @BreakingNews #
  • RT @danfrakes: If you'd invested 10k in AAPL in 1997, you'd have ~750k today #timemachinestocktips #
  • On laptop, live from my Sprint 3G/4G dongle. 3G reception appears to suck inside buildings, but works great in the car. 4G sucks everywhere. #
  • Key to getting Sprint 4G working is to gripe. Now getting 1 bar of 4G signal: 1.2 Mbps. Frustratingly weak; need more bars in more places. #
  • Sprint 4G: ping time of 369 milliseconds. For those who aren't nerds like moi, that is horrendously slow, and creates massive lag. #
  • Sprint 4G: for the record, when I was in a store parking lot and actually got GOOD signal, I was getting > 3 Mbps down. Impressive. #
  • Sprint 3G: Just tested the speed on this. Roughly half speed (750 kbps), but much better latency (177 ms). Still 1 bar. #
  • Occurs to me that even 5 years ago 768k download speed would've been considered blazing fast, and we would all be paying premo price for it. #
  • RT @BreakingNews: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says he will not accept election results showing victory for secular challenger – AP #
  • #Sprint 3G: One reason for the obscene ping times/latency might be that it assigns me a Kansas IP address (I'm in Texas). #
  • @jsnell I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who wants the iPad to be a portable AppleTV. With 720p video out + Frontrow/boxee, it'd be amazing. in reply to jsnell #

The Mouse is Dead. Long Live the Mouse.

After years of faithful service, my trusty Logitech MX Revolution (no longer made; replaced with the Logitech Performance Mouse MX) is finally going in the Great Peripheral Storage Closet in the Sky. The scroll-wheel has begun its death throes, sometimes scrolling up when I’m trying to scroll down, sometimes not scrolling at all, and so forth. Twice now I’ve inadvertently cranked the volume all the way up when trying to crank it down; I’m very lucky not to have blown my speakers out. The battery has also become anemic and unstable, sometimes outright refusing to charge for extended periods of time. Actually, I’ve decided to avoid wireless desktop input devices from here on. I’m not using my computer from across the room, so I don’t really need wireless, and batteries and charging are entirely too much of a hassle. One less wireless radio transceiver pair pouring radiation into the air won’t be a bad thing, either.

I can’t really complain about the hardware failing, as I’ve had this mouse at least four years now and used it for 8+ hours every day, but I thought this a good opportunity to try something new. I’ve read that trackballs are supposed to be more ergonomic, so I decided to try one. I went looking for four buttons (I’m a geek; two buttons is simply not enough) and a scrolling mechanism of some kind, and settled with the Kensington Expert Mouse, which has the most positive reviews of the models I looked at. One of my uncles actually had one of these when I was much, much younger (like, 12 or something), so there’s the added cachet of knowing I’m getting a very mature product. Another plus: trackballs don’t move. No more need for mousepad that takes up right half of my desk. Space!

Should be here Saturday. I’m excited. (Yes, you’re allowed to call me a dork for being excited about getting a mouse. I should put that on the About page.)

Edit (January 28, 2010, 2126 CDT): Edited some typos and added some clarification (and some missing words … oops).
